HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR SURGERY: A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE FOR PATIENTS
Undergoing surgery can feel overwhelming, but good preparation can make a big difference in your recovery and outcome. At Health Plus, we want you to feel confident, informed, and ready at every step of the way.
Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you prepare for your surgery:
Step 1: Understand Your Surgery
- Ask your doctor to explain:
- Why the surgery is needed
- What will happen during the procedure
- Risks, benefits, and expected recovery time
- Don’t hesitate to ask questions. There are no “silly” questions when it comes to your health.
Step 2: Complete Pre-Surgery Tests
- Your doctor may advise:
- Blood tests
- ECG or chest X-ray
- Fitness clearance
- Get these done on time so your surgery isn’t delayed.
Step 3: Follow Fasting Instructions
- You may be asked not to eat or drink for 6–8 hours before surgery.
- This is important for safe anaesthesia. If you eat too close to surgery time, your procedure might be postponed.
Step 4: Manage Your Medications
- Inform your doctor about all the medicines you’re taking.
- Some medications (like blood thinners or diabetes medicines) may need to be paused or adjusted before surgery.
Step 5: Take Care of Personal Hygiene
- Take a bath or shower the night before or morning of surgery.
- Do not apply creams, lotions, or powder to the surgery area unless advised.
Step 6: Pack a Small Bag (If You’ll Be Admitted)
- Bring:
- Aadhaar card / ID proof
- Any previous test reports
- Comfortable clothes, toiletries, and slippers
- List of current medications
Step 7: Avoid Smoking & Alcohol
- Stop smoking and drinking at least 1–2 weeks before surgery.
- These can affect healing and increase the risk of complications.
Step 8: Prepare Emotionally
- It’s normal to feel nervous. Talk to family, friends, or your doctor about your worries.
- Deep breathing and relaxation techniques can help calm anxiety.
