HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR SURGERY: A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE FOR PATIENTS

Undergoing surgery can feel overwhelming, but good preparation can make a big difference in your recovery and outcome. At Health Plus, we want you to feel confident, informed, and ready at every step of the way.

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you prepare for your surgery:

Step 1: Understand Your Surgery
  • Ask your doctor to explain:
    • Why the surgery is needed
    • What will happen during the procedure
    • Risks, benefits, and expected recovery time
  • Don’t hesitate to ask questions. There are no “silly” questions when it comes to your health.
Step 2: Complete Pre-Surgery Tests
  • Your doctor may advise:
    • Blood tests
    • ECG or chest X-ray
    • Fitness clearance
  • Get these done on time so your surgery isn’t delayed.
Step 3: Follow Fasting Instructions
  • You may be asked not to eat or drink for 6–8 hours before surgery.
  • This is important for safe anaesthesia. If you eat too close to surgery time, your procedure might be postponed.
Step 4: Manage Your Medications
  • Inform your doctor about all the medicines you’re taking.
  • Some medications (like blood thinners or diabetes medicines) may need to be paused or adjusted before surgery.
Step 5: Take Care of Personal Hygiene
  • Take a bath or shower the night before or morning of surgery.
  • Do not apply creams, lotions, or powder to the surgery area unless advised.
Step 6: Pack a Small Bag (If You’ll Be Admitted)
  • Bring:
    • Aadhaar card / ID proof
    • Any previous test reports
    • Comfortable clothes, toiletries, and slippers
    • List of current medications
Step 7: Avoid Smoking & Alcohol
  • Stop smoking and drinking at least 1–2 weeks before surgery.
  • These can affect healing and increase the risk of complications.
Step 8: Prepare Emotionally
  • It’s normal to feel nervous. Talk to family, friends, or your doctor about your worries.
  • Deep breathing and relaxation techniques can help calm anxiety.
At Health Plus, we’re with you every step
